What do people or animals with a viral infection smell like, and can dogs be used to diagnose them? Which food enrichment compounds have a beneficial effect on the human gut microbiome? Anna Matczuk, PhD, and Sabina Lachowicz, PhD, will be trying to answer these questions, having received funding for their projects under the Sonata 16 program of the National Science Centre.

As many as 11 research projects by scientists from the UPWr have received funding from the National Science Centre in the PRELUDIUM 20 competition, and seven in OPUS 21. Thanks to programmes such as BioLAB and DBU, talented and ambitious students and doctoral students from the UPWr are able to participate in internships in foreign research centres. This year, among the students to develop scientifically abroad are Marek Pieczka, Rafał Stępień and Kamila Kluczek.

Academic counselling centres providing psychological counselling operate at many Polish universities. The one at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences has been focusing on supporting students since 2020, following the coronavirus outbrake and lockdown. According to experts, the incidence of mental disorders among students is higher than in the general population.
