1951 saw the formation of the Institute of Foreign Languages, although within just two years it was transformed into the Foreign Language Centre; a cross-faculty unit brought into being at all Polish tertiary institutions through an ordinance by the Minister of Higher Education, on the second of February, 1953. Iga Butrym won a gold medal in the women's kumite competition during the Polish Open tournament in Bielsko-Biała. The PE teacher from UPWr and an active WKF karate fighter has been winning medals at the largest tournaments in Poland and Europe for over 10 years.

The fellowship of the Foundation for Polish Science START was awarded for the 24th time – it is the fellowship for the most able young scientists under the age of 30. Among the top three there is Doctor Krzysztof Sośnica from the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Geodesy of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław.
