Environmental engineering students attending classes on Maślickie Hill

On May 22, 2023, students of environmental engineering, as part of revitalization of degraded and industrial areas course, participated in field classes devoted to the subject of revitalization and reclamation of the inactive landfill “Maślice” in Wrocław.

This landfill is called Maślickie Hill (Wzgórze Maślickie) or Knoll (Górka Maślicka) by the residents of Wrocław. The class was organized by Dr. Justyna Kubicz and Daria Marczak, M.Eng.

The first waste was delivered to the "Maślice" landfill back in the 1960s. What is certainly surprising today, it was located in a bend of the Oder River. Although the landfill was established in a post-sand excavation, it forms a scenic heap. Since the early 1990s, the “Maślice” landfill used to be the only place for storing municipal waste from Wrocław. For nearly 40 years of use, a 49-meter hill has been piled up (counting the height of one floor as 2.6m, it is the height of an 18-story building). The volume of accumulated waste is 2.4 million m3. At the end of 2001, the landfill was closed and then reculivated. Unfortunately, according to regulations, full development of the landfill will be possible only 50 years after its closure.

As part of reclamation, the landfill site was secured, restoring its aesthetic and landscape values. To prevent uncontrolled emission of landfill gas into the atmosphere, a landfill degassing system (4 km of pipelines and 30 degassing wells) was built, eliminating the unpleasant odors felt by residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. Approximately 800,000 cubic meters of soil and aggregate from demolition waste taken from the Legnicka Street area were used for reclamation.

Unfortunately, access to the site is prohibited. Due to the active process of methanogenesis, an explosion might occur there under unfavorable conditions. Hence a special request: do not enter this area and do not smoke cigarettes or barbecue there!!

On behalf of the tutors and students, we would like to thank Ekosystem Sp. z o.o. for providing access to the facility and presenting the subject of reclamation of the “Maślice” landfill.
