The purpose of this trip was to learn about the principles of geotechnical rehabilitation and current maintenance of the former municipal landfill "Maślice" in Wrocław. The landfill is located in the northwestern part of the city, on Kozia Street. It was established in the second half of the 1960s, on the site of an excavation created after the exploitation of sand deposits.
The landfill was closed in 2000. At the time, the waste heap was nearly 50 meters high and was formed by about 2.4 million m3 of waste. As part of land remediation, the landfill heap was geotechnically secured by strengthening the slopes with reinforced soil and sealed with synthetic-mineral material. The heap was surrounded by an underground insulation screen and groundwater was protected against leachate from the landfill. A biological cover for the landfill was also provided and isolating vegetation was planted. An important stage of the work was the construction of a degassing system for the landfill, which is still in operation. Approximately 800,000 m3 of soil and aggregate from demolition waste materials generated at the time or accumulated in the city were used to remediate the landfill. After remediation, the top of the landfill became the highest point in the city (155 m above sea level).
