Kick-off meeting of the SYMBIOREM project, September 21-22, 2022, Bilbao, Spain

The SYMBIOREM project is a new European initiative to develop innovative biotechnologies for a cleaner environment.

The official launch of the SYMBIOREM project took place on September 21, 2022 during a kick-off meeting at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain. The meeting was attended by 14 partners from 10 countries, who will use microorganisms, microbiomes, proteins, plants and bivalves to remove pollutants from soil and water environment.

During the two-day meeting, participants were presented with the main goals and the research program. The meeting was also an opportunity for all partners and advisory board members to meet in person and exchange experiences. In addition, administrative matters concerning project implementation were discussed. It was also decided that in the third year of the project implementation, the partners' general assembly will be held at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.

At the meeting UPWr was represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krzysztof Lejcuś and Dr. Wiesław Fiałkiewicz, who gave presentations on UPWr and its role in the project, as well as the tasks to be coordinated by UPWr. In behind-the-scenes discussions, contact was made with THAMES21 LIMITED, which deals with floating wetlands. The UPWr team dedicated to floating islands has been invited for a study visit to London. Professor Nicoletta Riccardi, on the other hand, emphasized in discussions the role of bivalves in bioremediation processes.
