We are pleased to announce that on December 13, 2023, Krzysztof Wolski, M.Eng. successfully defended his doctoral thesis entitled “Modeling flow conditions in a shallow river overgrown with plants.”

In the study, the doctoral student confirmed the existence of the so-called vegetation damming. He proved an increase in the elevation of the water table in front of the plant zones. He also found that that the arrangement of plants in the riverbed can significantly influence the water velocity pattern and thus, in the long run, shape the morphological conditions in the riverbed. The doctoral student determined the limiting density using the example of common reed (27-50 plants per m2), at which a cluster of plants begins to be flowed by a stream of water, allowing to define such a cluster as a natural deflector in the riverbed.

The conclusions from the conducted research suggest that an interdisciplinary approach to river environmental management, taking into account the impact of vegetation on water levels in the watercourse, can contribute to maximizing capacity, pro-ecological regulation of rivers using vegetation, or introducing renaturalization processes.

We would like to congratulate Krzysztof Wolski, M.Eng. and wish him further successes in his scientific research.
