Daria Marczak, M.Eng., a doctoral student from our Institute, has been rewarded in category the Marian Suski scholarship in the field of engineering and technical sciences for her research on the development of a new technology - biodegradable water-absorbing geocomposites (BioGSW).

Biodegradable geocomposites can be used on slopes, as an element supporting the development of grassy vegetation or shrubs, as a water-retaining element in green roof structures, or in the planting of trees, shrubs, flowers and perennials. It is an innovative technology of water retention in soil that saves water and increases yields.

The results of Daria Marczak's research can be used in the modernization and construction of floodbanks, which will be of great importance in ensuring flood protection of the Odra and Wrocław drainage basin. Floodbanks are often devoid of vegetation, which causes their intense erosion. Protecting a floodbank with vegetation improves its security in case of a flood. Providing the right conditions for vegetation is a real challenge. The use of geocomposites will facilitate the plant development.

The Marian Suski scholarships for doctoral students in Wrocław are awarded as part of the Student Scholarship Programme implemented by the Wrocław Academic Hub.
