"On the trail of knowledge with the University of Environmental and Life Sciences" – a science event in Rakowice Wielkie

On September 21-22, 2023, the Economic and Technical School Complex in Rakowice Wielkie, in cooperation with the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, organized a two-day science event entitled "On the trail of knowledge with the University of Environmental and Life Sciences."

The interesting classes were attended not only by students of the school in Rakowice Wielkie, but also by students of other friendly schools: the Henryk Brodaty Complex of General and Vocational Schools in Lwówek Śląski, the Henryk Sucharski Complex of General and Vocational Schools in Bolesławiec, the Jędrzej Śniadecki Complex of General and Technical Schools in Jelenia Góra, the Lower Silesian School Complex in Biedrzychowice and the Elementary School in Parowa.

Participants learned about a polymer that improves soil moisture due to its properties. They applied it to establish hydroculture. Its effect will be a plant lettering in the area adjacent to the school buildings in Rakowice Wielkie. Students learned how water samples can be collected and how to test water quality in the field. Eager participants checked out how current meters and ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) meter work and what they are used for. They also performed experiments to see how even a small amount of salt affects water quality. Those who were interested could play the educational game of the serious games genre, AgriLemma. Players took on the role of farmers who must cultivate their fields, develop them and invest. They had to retain water, obtain fertilizer, and learn what their crops needed for maximum satisfaction with their harvests. There were also technical innovations - students could see how VR, or virtual reality, is used in safety studies, e.g. in a safe firefighting scenario or first aid.

This is not the first meeting between employees of the Institute of Environmental Engineering and high school students. Like the previous ones, it was very fruitful.

We would like to thank the organizers - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Katarzyna Pawęska and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Paweł Lochyński, as well as all the teachers and those involved in the preparation of classes.
